Using the Boot-Device feature

General informatin about the function

If you want to boot your server from a specific hard disk drive, the option Boot-Device makes this possible. You can e.g. install separate operating systems on each hard disk drive and boot from this device.

To use this feature, the following significant steps are necessary:

  1. Choose the contract
  2. Select the boot device
  3. Perform a Premium-Webreset

Application examples

Application example 1: Booting from the 2nd hard disk drive

Your server plan includes two hard disk drives. On the first hard disk you have installed CentOS and on the second hard disk you want to install a test installation of Debian. You intend that your server boots from the second hard drive on which the test installation of Debian is supposed to start.


Application example 2: Booting from USB flash drive

Your server plan includes two hard disk drives and you have booked an USB flash drive for this as well. The USB stick is recognized as an additional boot medium. You want to install VMware ESXi on this USB stick so that both drives are fully utilized for ESXi storage. Your server shall now boot from the USB flash drive on which you want to install ESXi.


Application example 3: Booting from hard disk drive in RAID1 array

Your server plan includes two hard disk drives, which are located in the RAID1 array. One of the hard disk drives fails and the server shall now boot from the working hard drive.

Using of the function

Choose the contract



  • Choose the corresponding server contract for which you want to use the option by clicking on "select contract".



Using / setting up the function "Boot-Device"

  • Click on the option "Boot-Device".



  • Set the boot device



Server will use this boot device after any Premium-Webreset. Please note, that your server will not start if you use a non existing boot device.
